We've closing in on less than a week until our hootenanny and I think we've just about smoked every pack of Pall Mall's Arcata Liqours has. Our pre-sale tickets are down to the last 15, so grab them fast. Adam and Matt's mothers will be there so everyone on their best behavior. Summer is in effect here in Humboldt and it seems every time the same thing happens, just when we get in a new order of stuff and start to tell you about our favorites, the horde descends and we're left with just one or two of them left. Worry not though, we've got another order coming in to re-stock our summer jam picks and there's still alot of awesome stuff we've stuffed into our newly expanded CD section.

GHOSTFUNK

Aw man, this here is a release so good, we wish we could pay for it. Available as a free download, this masterpiece released this year from Max Tannone is a free download on his website. Here is a small description of Mr. Tannone from his website. "Max burst onto the scene in early 2009 with “Jaydiohead”, combining the sounds of rap king Jay-Z and British rockers Radiohead. Catching the ears of MTV, NBC, hundreds of blogs, music news sites, and vinyl bootleggers, the project had Jay-Z himself even tweeting “There are 3 or 4 real gems on Jaydiohead.” After listening to this ten times in a row, we finally had to say thank you Brian Woida for finding this one.

JEFF THE BROTHERHOOD "We Are The Champions"

Last year, Jeff the Brotherhood came out of nowhere. After playing a life changing in store at our old spot, we loaded up on merch. and "Heavy Days" wound up one of our top 5 records of the year. It was seriously like some kind of modern-day Seabiscuit story. Recently, Rolling Stone named this one of the up and coming bands to look out for. What they didn't realize was that these guys already have a 5 awesome albums, a slew of limited splits and even their own label with other rad artists as well. Then again, we all know nothing is ever really discovered musically until Jack White catches on.


IKEBE SHAKEDOWN

This is another one of those, 'you don't like it, bring it back' albums, we tore through all 10 of our first batch in 24 hours. Based out of Brooklyn, which has seemingly become the center of cinematic soul, this amazing seven piece was named after their favorite Nigerian boogie record. Congas, Horns, fuck man this one almost had me thinking this was some kind of Daptone/Truth & Soul/Ubiquity supergroup. Right now we're waiting for our companies to re-stock but they should be back this week and until then we still have the CD.


NEXT STOP SOWETO VOL 3

Though not a brand new release, the 3rd volume in the incredible Soweto trilogy goes deep into the mines of South African jazz to compile a collection of what they call, "Giants, Ministers and Makers." Taken from the years 63-78, this double LP set is nothing to scoff at. As our friend King Maxwell might say, this is some real adult shit.


CIAN NUGENT "Doubles"

Last post, we mentioned how we were gonna clue you into a new emerging genre Adam's calling 'Apocalyptic Appalachia.' In the vein of such American Primitve legends such as Fahey, Basho,and Sandy Bull, Cian, takes his roots in Pre-war blues, Appalachian folk, and Irish traditional music and flips it into something much darker and completely his own. We first got clued into this guy a few years ago by Anthony of Goat Eater Arts, but up until now his stuff was nearly impossible to find. Now finally easily available from the great folks at VHF records, his latest full length "Doubles" showcases this major talent in an audacious setting of two side-long epics. Cian has ample technique, but the virtuosity here is all in service of the mood and the build up. His guitar has a darker, more intimate sound than many current players, without the brittle ring common to fingerstyle. The emergence of a deep drone after 15 minutes shakes up the track, like a swarm of bees spilling out of the speakers. There is not much better on those foggy early Humboldt morning than a fine cup of coffee and "Doubles" on the stereo

Here at Missing Link we got a big ole soft spot for old tunes about drug, sex and various other illicit activities and this here is right up our alley. Originally released as a 5 CD collection, the individual volumes have been coming back in small stock so we struck quickly and got in a few volumes for our fans.

Coming to the Jambalaya August 2nd, the return of the Buffalo Killers to Humboldt County. Many of you probably remember how they and the Ravens blew the doors clean off of Large Peter's Pizza Emporium a few years back. Their country psych rock style has been expanding since their last release and with a new album dropping that very day, this show promises to be epic.

PINE HILL HAINTS AT THE ALIBI

One of our favorite country bands around today, the Haints have been droppin' jaws around these parts for a few years now. We were lucky enough to have them play in our old shop and are keeping our fingers crossed that they'll be able to make another appearance at our new digs. Regardless, don't miss them as they rip roar their way through the Alibi August 13th.

DECHEMAN & THE GARDENER

Without a doubt this is one of our top five records of this year. Sounding like a Psychedelic Bossanova Freakout, veteran rocker Decheman and his young Gardener have created an album that is so good, we had them shipped all the way from France rather than miss out on this 300 copy run of LPs. Organ, Flute, harmonica and guitar collide with the drums to create that kind of original throwback sound so many musicians have tried unsuccessfully to capture. We don't know if it's the relaxed climate, the warm sound of the home recording, or maybe it's the rosé but whatever the cause, these two frenchies have succeeded in recording just the kind of rump shaker this U.S. of A needed for the summer. As we mentioned, copies of this are limited so grab one while you can, and check out the back where our own little Mattjackson got his first album mention! Thanks to Yannick and the fine folks at Kizmiaz Records for putting out an album we wholeheartedly believe everyone should hear.

PORNO GROOVE

Two weeks ago, our friends at Secret Stash gave us the sad news that this amazing LP has gone out of print. We were just about to gnash our teeth over selling our copies when we discovered a box tucked behind the desk of another of our distributors! Fantasy Entertainment, one of the top producers of porno during the 70's and 80's, in a dramatic turn of events, apparently recorded more awesome music for porno than they did porno itself! 30 reels of unreleased music, along with the music from their blockbusters, was discovered by the former CEO's son Mort Rosen and after lengthy legal battles over the rights, Secret Stash was able to release 2 volumes of material from awesome action films like Grateful Head, Ride Me Like a Wave and The Beaver Hunter.

WATER TOWER BUCKET BOYS "Meet Me Where The Crow Don't Fly"

Our favorite Portlandians have returned with an EP to keep your thirst up for their modern Americana sound. If you came out to their last show at the Arcata Playhouse or maybe caught them at the barn dance then you saw just how these boys can transition seamlessly between original material, traditional standards like Cumberland Gap or even a Misfit's cover. Showcasing the songwriting skills of each of the band's core members, this EP shows the continuing evolution of a band that is helping to carry traditional American music into the future.

Ah Oysterfest, when the plaza explodes with fake tits & chin straps all stuffed to overflowing with overpriced shellfish and tiny cups of beer. We've broken out the army helmets, sharpened a box of projectile 45s and dug a trench in the used Classical section. If you need a parlay, just wave a white flag first so we don't send a razor sharp Johnny Tillotson your way.

ORCHESTRE POLY RYTHMO "1st Album"

Just in time for the warm weather comes another shake your moneymaker release. Released on the heels of their first album in 20 years and part 1 of Analog Africa's new Dance Series, the hypnotic sounds of Orchestra Poly Rythmo return with their first release from 1973. Originally recorded twice because of feedback from a keyboard amp, the originals have been lovingly restored so that two of the four tracks on this album have never hit the light of day.

Recently, we had a visit from some of our uber music nerd friends who live in Seattle and while looking through our 7" we were told to stock this new album from the UK band Yuck. Released on Fat Possum records, they've been compared to Dinosaur Jr or Sonic Youth. Seeing as we love Fat Possum and our friends have turned us on to countless bands over the years, both good and bad, we threw some on the order. Come tell us what YOU think.

PAKISTAN "Instrumental Folk & Pop Sounds 1966-76"

Oh Sublime Frequencies, it's like you always know what to get the record collector who thinks he has everything. This limited 2-LP set, recorded straight from the original masters, comes lovingly wrapped in a heavy duty full-color gatefold package filled with bands photos and extensive liner notes from Stuart Ellis of Radiodiffusion Internasionaal, who spent the greater part of the last ten years tracking down these musicians and compiling this awesome new comp.


ROB "Funk Rob Way"

Analog Africa have released a new series in their collection called "Limited Dance Editions." Their objective: "to release African and tropical records (in strictly limited editions) which concentrate on single artists that have had an impact on the label in a way or another." Along with the first Orchestra Poly-Rythmo, Funky Rob Way is the musical story of Rob "Roy" Raindorf, one of the most enigmatic artists to ever come out of Ghana. Trained on the piano at a music school in Cotonou, Benin, Raindorf played with acts like Orchestre Poly-Rythmo and the Black Santiagos before returning to Ghana to begin his own career. This, as well as his second release, featuring the backing power of an immense traveling army band called 'Mag-2.'Just One More Time - ROB by Analog Africa

"RAVE ON BUDDY HOLLY" JUNE 28TH
End of this month will see what hopes to be an awesome compilation of Buddy Holly tunes from acts like My Morning Jacket, CeeLo Green, Modest Mouse, The Black Keys, The Detroit Cobras and more. It won't be all roses though as they're also joined by acts like Kid Rock, She & Him, Karen Elson and The Strokes' Julian Casablancas. Here's a sneak peak with the amazing rendition of "Not Fade Away" by Florence & The Machine.

After sequestering themselves at a mysterious little shack in the hills of Red Bluff, the Alive Records Power Trio is finally returning with a new album. Back from their U.S. tour and planning a big Summer excursion in Europe, these stony former Humboldtians are prepping their third album for release. It's been almost a week now since we opened our copies of the new Frank Fairfield album and it shows no signs of being kicked off the #1 spot. We've said it over and over again, this guy is awesome. We sold 15 copies the first week, which for our sleepy hamlet is a pretty awesome thing. This week only, you can check out a short film about Frank filmed in collaboration with IFC, Dust-to-Digital and KEXP Seattle.

It's another amazing sunny day here in Humboldt County but don't let it surprise you, the rapture is coming. NEW BEASTIE BOYS

So we've been fielding alot of calls from customers wondering what's up with the new Beastie Boys album and so we thought we'd take a minute to sit right there and tell you how we became the store where the shopkeepers care. Despite releasing the cd version of "Hot Sauce Committee Part 2" on the 3rd of May, turntable enthusiasts will have to wait until June 21st until we get our shot at the album. The album, originally intended as a 2-part'er, has been restructured after the band discovered that Adam Yauch had developed cancer in his salivary glands. Here's their newest video entitled, "Make Some Noise."


FRANK FAIRFIELD "Out on the Open West" May 31st

Frank Fairfield is a genuine musician. Strip away all the interviews about his 78 collection and articles praising his "old soul" and there remains an awkward yet talented young man who enjoys a pair of slacks. After wearing a hole in not one but two copies of his first release, we're chomping at the bit to get our hands on this new one. Complete with original songs and guest appearances by Blind Boy Paxton, The Petrojvic Brothers and more, "Out on the Open West" shows just how far this man has come as an interpreter of Popular American songs. CHARLIE PARR "When the Devil Goes Blind" OUT NOW

From Austin, Minnesota comes Charlie Parr. With nine full length albums and countless collaborations under his belt, as usual we are a little late to the game. Damn have we been missing out. One part banjo wizard, one part 12 string slinger, and one part slide master, Charlie's songs do justice to that old sound with out simply aping old recordings. With a gravel voice and lightning fast hands he could be from an earlier time, but lie's firmly in the present. Do yourself a favor and pick up his latest "When the Devil Goes Blind", Adam has been annoying Jackie with this one on repeat for at least the last three weeks.


MICHI SARMIENTO "Y Su Combo Bravo" OUT NOW

Already this album is in the running for our summertime soundtrack. Soundway Records supplies us with another collection of killer Cumbia. Even if you can't dance, this double LP will make your inner ass shake and move and while you may not understand all the words, this record will endow you with the three things a bum from Trinidad told us make up the secrets of life, "makin' shakin' and gyratin'"


SEUN ANIKULAPO KUTI "From Africa with Fury: Rise" OUT NOW

Appearing at this year's Reggae On The River, the son of legendary performer Fela Kuti hits us with a double 12" with 8 tracks in all. After hearing the amazing drumming, infectious choruses and blazing horns on this one, we think you'll agree that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Pick up a copy so you'll know how amazing it will be to see these guys at this year's Reggae on the River.


DENNIS COFFEY "Self Titled" OUT NOW

Thank you Strut Records for another killer release to kick off our summer! A double LP featuring amazing guests like Mick Collins (The Dirtbombs) and Rachel Nagy (The Detroit Cobras) covering Funkadelic's "I'll Bet You," Fanny Franklin (Orgone) singing Wilson Pickett’s "Don’t Knock My Love" and Lisa Kekaula (The Bellrays) taking on 100 Proof's "Somebody’s Been Sleeping." If you aren't already familiar, this man is a former member of the Motown legends The Funk Brothers and helped create the theme to one of our favorite films, "Black Belt Jones." As the weather heats up, this collection of killer tunes are just the thing to blast on your way to the river. Check out one of our favorite tracks, "Miss Millie," backed up by the amazing funk purveyors, Kings Go Forth.


MAN MAN "Life Fantastic" OUT NOW

Frantic yet poetic, Man Man and their catchy harmonized howlings have always had a place on our CD racks. After being slightly disappointed in their last album, the plucky Pennsylvanian four piece returns with their Viking-vaudeville sound for another go. This new album has a bit of MGMT added in with their unique sound and although their albums never quite capture the live performances, this new album is another great addition to the upcoming summer.

ULTIMATE X-MEN

So, admittedly I'm an X-geek. Though many titles caught my attention while I was growing up, it was bald headed Chuck and the gang that never failed to take my $2.75 every month. That being said, I consider myself fairly skeptical at the different veins and directions the stories have taken nowadays. Most X-titles confuse the hell out of me now and force me to spend time on wikipedia before re-reading them in order to understand a storyline that, in the end, doesn't even interest me. Ultimate X-Men however is not just another X-title. With the 'Ultimate' series, Marvel has offered creators a chance to re-write history and shape a different path without relying on the "What If" prefix. More than just a cheap rehashing for cash, these novels re develop the characters, offering glimpses into possibilities many Marvel readers have written countless letters to see. My only complaint with the series is that the art switches in a few of the later issues to a far too cartoony style that overly emphasizes the real-life-kids aspect that this 'Ultimate' series seems to keep as its backbone, which sometimes threatens to turn action into the Wonder Years. -Matt

April Comes and Goes

POST RECORD STORE DAY




Another Record Store Day has come and gone and we all survived. Down here at the shop we were happy to see that everyone seemed to find most of what they were looking for and to those who got skunked we apologize but as we've all heard over and over again, we ordered it all and we got what we got. The crowd was soothed by the sounds of DJ Mantease and as our friends at Aquarius Records reminded everyone, we stock limited and hard to find shit EVERYDAY, not just in April. That being said, we had a blast checking out everyone's purchases and trying to answer questions, can't wait for next year.

May 7th marks the yearly Free Comic Book Day! and since the big boys won't let us play in their sandbox without spending $1,000, we're throwing our own party. Come check us out the first Saturday in May and we'll have comic book buttons courtesy of Daisy Drygoods, on-sale graphic novels for the snagging as well as a box full of free comics at the counter. Anyone who walks through the door is encouraged to grab a free issue. Make sure to visit Northcoast Roleplaying for official Comic Book Day stuff and when you're done, head over to the kid's table where we'll be flinging spoonfuls of casserole and prostrating ourselves before a stone idol of Jack Kirby.

Oddfuturewolfgangkillthemall. Where to start with these guys? A Hip Hop collective out of L.A. featuring leader Tyler, The Creator and members Earl Sweatshirt (quite possibly our favorite rap moniker of all time), Hodgy Beats, Domo Genesis, Mike G, singer Frank Ocean, producers Left Brain, Syd tha Kyd (who is also the group's engineer) and the Super 3 and other non-musical members. Crazy ass skate kids who's live shows bring to mind the energy of early Bad Brains or other D.C. hardcore bands. With a gravel tongued swagger we haven't seen since early Wu-Tang releases, Tyler is set to drop his debut album Goblin sometime this May. While we could do without the F bombs...and we don't mean Fuck, this is some next level shit that west coast hip hop desperately needs. Check out the self released video for his single "Yonkers"


HOLLY GOLIGHTLY & THE BROKEOFFS "No Help Coming"

We're not gonna lie, we have a big ole' crush on Ms. Holly and love pretty much everything she does. Hell, Adam even danced his first wedding dance to a Holly song. This new album, on brown swirl vinyl, is a shot in the arm of blues, country and rock that promises to take over our record player for at least the rest of this week. While not straying too far from the last couple of releases she's done with her man Lawyer Dave they switch it up enough to make it interesting. OCHESTRE POLY-RYTHMO "The Cotonou Club"

Their first album in twenty years, recorded on all analog equipment in Paris, hail the latest album from musical legends Orchestre Poly-Rythmo. Released on Strut Records, this heavy double Lp sees not only revamping of old material but new songs and guest spots by Angelique Kidjo and Franz Ferdinand!


LEFT LANE CRUISER "All You Can Eat"

This was a staple of the tour van during Radio Moscow's last European tour. A mix of honky-tonk, hard rock and slide guitar influenced by Mississippi bluesmen, Left Lane Cruiser stays in the vein along with duos like Hillstomp and Doo Rag but puts the pedal to the metal when the goin' gets loud. Their new album, released in March of this year on Alive, was partially recorded by labelmate John Wesley Myers, of The Black Diamond Heavies.



THE ROCK A TEENS "Woo Hoo"

Uncovered on one of Adam's digging trips, the story behind this band is a sad and all too repeated tale in musical history. These boys wrote a hit number called Woo-Hoo, were threatened with a plagiarism lawsuit from another artist so they sold the rights to their producer for pennies. What they didn't know was that their producer had already brokered a deal to sell the song to Roulette for a tidy profit. The band recorded one album after the single's success but then faded into obscurity. This is the song from Kill Bill that launched the 30 second fascination with the 5678's...but better.


LOCAL COMIC!
We're excited to highlight a local comic in our blog this month! Created by local Brother and Sister Team , Coin-Op is printed right here in town by Bug Press. The layout is grabbing, the colors vibrant and the stories a sort of comic strip meets ZAPP, with art that brings to mind the work of R. Crumb and Moscoso. Come check it out, as each issue is published in a limited run.

We've hit the terrible two!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY YOU OLD SO AND SO

April 1st marks our second year anniversary here at the store and we're celebrating the birthday the way any parent of a two year old would, by foam wrapping everything in preparation for the storm to come. Already our heads are spinning from three awesome and completely different in-stores this week plus the incredible submissions from the art contest and the shop shows no sign of stopping for a nap anytime soon. We'd like to thank all our customers, supporters, friends & family and most importantly, the hobo who regularly cleans out our ashtray for us...we couldn't do this without you. Seriously though, we really couldn't be doing this job we love so very much without all of you who buy records, come to the shows, bring us your used music, or even just tell your friends about us, thank you for being a part of our dream.

KITTY, DAISY & LEWIS

There are those moments here at the shop where we're reminded how much we don't know about music hitting the scene and this, dear readers, is one of those times. Kitty, Daisy and Lewis, the three children of Graeme Durham, (owner of The Exchange, a British mastering studio known for recent albums like "the XX" and "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix"), have been releasing singles since all the way back in 2005. Their music, which incorporates elements of Western Swing, R&B, Sun-era rock n' roll and even Hawaiian, is like something you'd expect coming out of an old Victrola on Sunday nights. Though they've toured with bands like Coldplay and Jools Holland, the band is true to their sound, collecting all vintage equipment with which to record not only cds and lps but limited runs of 78s as well. Their new album comes out May 30th and we're hoping it will get US release at the same time. Until then, we'll have their other album in stock in cd.


TV ON THE RADIO "Nine Types of Light" April 22

After letting down most of their original fans with "Dear Science," TVOTR are back at it again. Billed as an album/movie, "Nine Types of Light" will release right before Record Store Day. Personally, we were big fans before that last album and this one sounds like another push in the direction "Dear Science" took, (like a bad RHCP from the mid 2000's), but hey what do we know. We'd love to show you the full trailer for the release but it's only on itunes and we don't even know what pinging it to you means. Instead, here's a mini trailer and a song from the album.


THE MOUNTAIN GOATS "All Eternals Deck" OUT NOW

It's the Mountain Goats. Anything we say about this album doesn't really matter, we're biased and we buy anything John Darnielle does and worry about if it's any good later.


FLEET FOXES "Helplessness Blues" May 3

Ok, here it is. We've all been here before. Last year Fleet Foxes kicked ass and took names with Sun Giant and their self titled release. On the heels of this comes their second full length album. Will it win people over as much as the first? Truthfully we've only listened to one track pre-release date and while it sounded more Simon and Garfunkle than the CSN sound their last album seemed to have, there was similar orchestrations with lyrics that were a manifesto beating at the walls of the its construct (in other words, he's got a lot to say in each line).


PANDA BEAR "Tomboy" April 12

Now we know all of you are sleeping at night with your Animal Collective tickets clutched tightly in your hands, but April 12th will also mark the release of Panda Bear's next full length album. If you've been some of the lucky few snagging copies of the singles as they've come out, or you just listened to a track online, you know that this is a slightly new direction since the last album. Personally, we like what we've heard so far and can't wait. Also, be on the lookout for the 7"/t-shirt he's releasing for RSD, we ordered it and let's all hope they come in. And if Panda Bear is reading this, how about coming by to promote your album when you're in town?


RECORD STORE DAY

Speaking of Record Store Day, they've finally put up a list you can download with your choices for this year. We've ordered a metric shit ton of stuff and we're lighting candles at Conway's portrait in hopes that it all shows up. Regardless of what happens, it will be a stomping good time as DJ Brian Woida spins his funky ass off.
