Well we survived another morning of people eying us like wolves while we smoke our pre-opening cigarettes. Boy were we surprised to find a line to the sidewalk an hour before we opened the door! Thanks to everyone for making it another bang smash success, especially to King Maxwell and Ghostwriter for providing our Record Store Day soundtrack. Our apologies if you didn't get your hands on that special release you were looking for but, as fellow vinyl purveyors Aquiarius Records said, we have special hard to find releases everyday. Next year look for bigger and better things from us as we continue to celebrate independent record stores!
New Stuff
Why oh why do we get lost in re-issue land? Seems whenever we're asked to give our newest favorite records, the list is populated with Nigerian, Cuban, and Deep South re-issues rather than the next up and coming indie band. So we, the folks at Missing Link, have given up fighting the current. Fuck it, re-issue is king and we are grabbing a palm frond and making sure the king stays cool. Woods in Arcata -- JUNE 2010
We've been given a heads up that the only indie band from last year we thought was worth a damn is heading up our way. Listen close, Woods will be an awesome show. I know some of you might not feel comfortable going to an indie show that isn't at the Green House, but slap on an extra bracelet and your ironically large glasses (the ones without the lenses) and come to where we'll be getting our minds blown by these young men.

Record Store Day is Coming, but first Some New Treats!!

Formed out of the ashes of experimental indie pop pand Saturday Looks Good to Me, The duo of Ryan Howard and Fred Thomas, also known as City Center, will be coming up north to play at Nocturnum April 13th, but first they'll stop by for an all ages in store. Similar to artists like Panda Bear and the Ruby Suns, City Center pairs their haunting vocals with background loops and lo-fi guitar to create melodic soundscapes much in the same way as Tunng did with their album Comments of the Inner Chorus. Don't miss what is bound to be an awesome show, we'll be front and center. April 13th at 3:00pm, courtesy of Panache Booking and Missing Link Records.

We drove down to S.F. last week to see Radio Moscow play the Elbo Room with Assembled Head in Sunburst Sound, but it was heavy psych rockers Naam who stole the show. This newly signed TeePee Records band, having recently wowed audiences at SXSW, ventured west, camping on BLM land, "since we heard it was free," showering in a river and shitting in a hole for a week before leaving the woods to start off their tour in S.F. Heavy fuzzed out bass and melodic guitar ramblings meet with echoed out screams and reverberated vocals are backed by heavy drums that keep time with a perfect stoner rock-headbanging tempo. Not since the glorious days of yore have our brains been so blasted on a barroom floor.
Decheman & The Gardener
Recently I was on a roadtrip where we all had ipods and no plug in the rental car for them. We qiockly ran through the two cds we had, just about giving up home, until the sky split open, God tweeked his nipple with a grin, and dropped down a copy of Decheman and the Gardener. Part fuzzed out garage, part lounge bassanova, this French duo is made up of a seasoned veteran of the rock scene and his 18 year old gardener. the album is made up of the kind of thick guitar tones and hollow vocals that you might expect to find on some old Bacchus Re-issue, certainly not from today, somewhere in the suburbs of French wine country. Best enjoyed while drinking a glass of wine, one listen and you'll wonder why this isn't on that oh-so-hip "cocktail party" tracklist on your ipod.

To me, seeing the word Thee before a band is like an M. Night Shamalyan movie, its probably going to suck but you go anyways. That's why I was so pleasantly blown away at a show featuring Thee Vicars. Described as, "four annoying bastards from the great town of Bury St Edmunds. Forming in April 2007, they like dirty and fuzzy noise," that just about sums it up. No pretense, no funky gimmicks, just good ole fashioned garage rock and roll, turned up loud and screamed with a British accent. With new tunes and some classic covers, including Strychnine by the Sonics, their set rekindled my belief that garage rock is still alive and well in the year 2010.

Pax Nicholas & The Nettey Family
"Na Teef Know De Road of Teef"
in 1971 Nicholas Addo-Netteybecame a full member of Fela´s legendary band Africa 70 as a conga player and background singer.While playing and recording for Fela’s Africa 70, Nettey released Na Teef Know The Road of Teef in 1973 for the Tabansi Label with the Martin Brothers Band from Portharcort, Nigeria. Made with Africa 70 musicians and singers and recorded in Ginger Baker’s highly equipped Lagos studio, Fela was not amused at all, even less when he heard how strong the Na Teef… album was. Reportedly, he said, “Don’t you ever, EVER play it again!” And so it was. Despite being a killer record, Na Teef… remained undercover for more than 30 years.

San Francisco's Moon Duo was formed in 2009 by Sanae Yamada and Erik Johnson of Wooden Shjips. This new release may be only four tracks long but just imagine Wooden Shjips without the deadweight and you've got what has been described as a, "sonic stew" (slight apologies to the Wooden Shjips fans). But, as LeVar Burton would say, don't take my word for it, check out Moon Duo below.
Scumbag Country is how Nevada based Hellbound Glory described their music, "as traditional as your Grandma's apple pie and as potent as your cousin's home cooked crank." Blue collar country, just as drunk and broke as Waylon, Merle or Kristofferson. Show starts at 3pm, and the band will also be playing later that night at The Alibi in Arcata.

A former Humboldt musician who now lives in Utah, Stag Hare is an one man project involving loop pedals and repeating patterns that weave together to create amazing and stony soundscapes. New Stuff to Chew On PART 1
Doc Boggs - When My Worldly Trials are Over.
Pioneering singer / banjo player Dock Boggs (b. 1898) got his start playing (while working) in the coal mines all over the poverty-stricken Appalachian region. His earliest recordings, a blend Appalachian old-time music and early blues, come from 1927-1929. By 1930, however, the Great Depression had forced Boggs to pawn his banjo and go back to selling moonshine and working in the coal mines. Thankfully, he was rediscovered by folk revivalist Mike Seeger in the 1960s. This new release from Monk Records is comprised of some extremely rare alternate takes (recorded between 1927-1929) of some of his greatest songs.
Cecil Barfield - South Georgia Blues
We can all give a giant pat on the back to Mississippi Records for putting out this wonderful George Mitchell recording. Born in 1922, Cecil Barfield started playing when he was just five by attaching a neck to a cooking oil can and tying a string to it. Learning music from what he heard off records at parties, Barfield's style comes from what he calls "rag pieces", bits of popular tunes picked up from round dances and parties and often reworked according to his moaning, wrenching style.

Wales is not the place you immediately think of when someone mentions garage-blues. So imagine how stunned I was to meet Brennig and Aled, two brothers from Cardiff who not only play gritty old fashioned blues licks but are the kind of strangers you'd trust with your wallet. With the kind of two man simplistic yet driving style that has garnered them comparisons to the White Stripes, they set themselves apart as being one of the few non-U.S. bands signed to Alive Records. The best part though is that they tour with their dad, in a fixed up county truck armed with an array of pasta and potatoes...now that's rock.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST...
While off on the Radio Moscow Euro Tour, the guys found themselves playing at a bar that videotapes all their shows via 3D! Make yourself up some glasses (or buy a pair at Time Traveller) and enjoy the magic of Radio Moscow in your own home!

Holiday Gift Guide
Ok, December is here and it's alright to put out the wreath and spin our peanuts Christmas album. Seeing as there's still time to shop for those you love, or those your obligated to through some work party and us being the helpful folk we are, here's a little peek at some of the goodies we've sprinkled out like visions of sugarplums.
Even though Adam and Matt may differ over whether The Smiths are to be treasured or trashed, neither can deny these UK singles are in great shape and won't last long.
Tom Waits live double LP taken from the recent Glitter and Doom tour. Includes a digital download that includes the "Tom Talks" disc of all conversation. Amazing renditions of classic Waits songs that strike the buying itch in both regular and the rabid bootleg collecting Tom fans.
The perfect thing for the rabid fanboy you might be dating. A beautiful set of original Watchmen comics with extras. This hard to find set comes to us at a fraction of the price you'd see online and in very good shape.
When Fat Possum released Andrew Bird's Noble Beast, they also put out a hush hush live cd in small pressing. Taken from a 2007 live show in Montreal, Bird performs earlier songs that are often considered better than his new stuff.
Thinking about how to please that music dork on your list? How about some first pressing Sonic Youth albums? Wax that's clean enough for Howie Mandell to eat off of and hard to find, that's just how we like 'em.

I wear black friday on the outside because black friday is how I feel on the inside.
Black Friday is upon us and here in sleepy Arcata, where commerce is seemingly immune to the frantic four a.m. shoppers. We have taken to making our own Black Friday by only playing bands with the word Black in their name or album title...no we do not have too much time on our hands. After a weekend of banjo laden hijinx, we've caught a full dose of old time fever and the store has too. This post is full of re-releases hitting the shelves, recent loot to swing onto the racks and some of the newer acts out there still making that classic sound.
Crow Quill Night Owls
Ah Port Townsend, the Washintonian equivalent of Arcata and home to Kit "Stymee" Stovepipe and Calliope Kane, former members of the Inkwell Rhythm Makers and Below the Salt. With a sound that reminds one of the Cheap Suit Serenaders, Stovepipe gravels out the kind of ragtime and rhythm that you'd normally hear at 78rpm. Carolina Chocolate Drops
The Carolina Chocolate Drops are an African-American String band in the old-time tradition. Based in the Triangle area of North Carolina their music is rooted in the foothills and mountains of north and south Carolina. Learning their trade from master old-time fiddler Joe Thompson, they have been tearing up stages all over the world since 2005. Unlike other kinds of string band music the Chocolate Drops play in the Piedmont style, with roaring banjos out in front while the fiddle hangs and hums in the back.....beautiful stuff!
Pokey LaFarge
After tearing the roof off of 3 Foods Cafe yet again, The South City Three and their skinny frontman have smashed their way to the top of our daily playlist with their newest release, entitled "Riverboat Soul." Backed by some of the best hardworkin' musicians out there, including Old Crow Medicine Show fiddler Ketch Secor, this band brings the "A" game to every performance, often playing for four hours before breaking a sweat. Though Riverboat Soul isn't fully released yet, the band's website has some preview tracks, including our new favorite song, "Bag of Bones."

Live Conference recently made its appearance onto wax and we here at the shop are willing to part with a few copies. Deluxe limited edition vinyl-only release packaged in heavy-duty tip-on style die cut jackets. Conference of the Birds played in its entirety and recorded on 24-track multi-track remote audio at their 2008 performance in New York.

A five lp box set for the afro-funk loving nerd in all of us. 900 grams of vinyl, two unreleased tracks, a twelve page booklet...are you drooling yet? Halloween is almost here and gone & for the first year ever, we're not already bumping Halloween records and wearing our stormtrooper masks. Seems like this year their isn't much time for the Monster Mash as the record player is already overbooked with new lp's to blast down 8th street.
NEW RELEASES
The Mountain Goats
John Darnielle is back and apparently he plays the piano now. This new collection of 12 songs outlines "hard lessons" he learned from specific verses of the bible. Thankfully, as a lapsed Catholic and professed nonbeliever who chants the Hare Krishna, this is not Darnielle's version of the infamous "hey look I found religion" albums, instead this album is soft and contemplative. The one complaint Matt has about The Life of the World to Come is that it lacks the raw hollerin' type of songs found on earlier recordings but hey, isn't it always the cynical nerd who says, "it'll never be as good as that first demo 8 track I traded that guy with the lazy eye an ounce for."

He plays in old bars, Churches, and at the L.A. Farmers Market with a coffee can at his feet. He has a radio show where he plays old 78s. He's a giant of a man whose banjo looks like a kid's toy in his hands. He is Frank Fairfield and we'd compare his music to other bands, except the kind of music he plays pre-dates the music you listen to! Recorded with just one man and three instruments, his self titled debut is a jaw dropping return to old timey music.
The King Khan and BBQ Show
The new upcoming album, Invisible Girl, from King Khan and BBQ is more of just what you'd expect from these two: toe tapping garage motown that almost sounds too energetic for just two men, even if one of them is in a sequin evening gown. After being disappointed with their collaboration with the Black Lips, these two nugget acolytes have totally redeemed themselves with this new and a bit more polished release.

Mississippi Records is stoking our fire as of late, their cache of affordable bluesy records have crawled up and nestled right in our left ventricles. Adam screamed like a woman after finding Abner Jay's album. The son and grandson of slaves in Washington County, Georgia, Jay started playing in medicine shows when he was 5 and is the one man blues equivalent of a punch to the gut.
Matt peed himself a little when he opened a box and pulled out Last Kind Word Blues. Along with a slew of murder-your-neighbor-for-a-copy blues tunes from 1926-53, it contains Geeshie Wiley's heartbreaking title track (that's a $120 78 if you can find it), wonderful music your granparents made your parents to.
Analogue Africa...sigh. We feel about Analogue Africa the way 15 yr old girls felt about Shaun Cassidy during the 70's, whenever one of these hits our record player you can be sure it stays on at least 2 or 3 times. These 2 lp sets are the stuff that makes any group of people begin shakin their booties to the hypnotic beat. Recently we tested this and we received a positive result on 13 out of 17 city buses (3 buses threw us off and 1 had a guy in a Tasmanian devil hat that had obviously already captured everyone's attention).
