POST RECORD STORE DAY




Another Record Store Day has come and gone and we all survived. Down here at the shop we were happy to see that everyone seemed to find most of what they were looking for and to those who got skunked we apologize but as we've all heard over and over again, we ordered it all and we got what we got. The crowd was soothed by the sounds of DJ Mantease and as our friends at Aquarius Records reminded everyone, we stock limited and hard to find shit EVERYDAY, not just in April. That being said, we had a blast checking out everyone's purchases and trying to answer questions, can't wait for next year.


NUMERO'S GOLDEN TICKET

Reason number 5,723 we love these guys. After Record Store Day ended, news came out that 10 of the 300 cassettes released for Record Store Day were gold colored. The lucky winners of the golden tickets receive an even more limited 45 as a special Record Store Day gift! REGGAE ON THE RIVER TICKETS

Get a firm grip on your seats before reading this next part, we're going to Reggae on the River. Now on sale at the shop, tickets to this year's event are only 95 bucks and the lineup includes Seun Kuti and Africa 80!


ArtsArcata WITH JEFF JENSEN

Come see us May 13th for Arts Arcata with this month's artist/musician Jeff Jensen. Our walls will be filled with Jeff's woodcuts and our store will be filled with the sounds of him and his band-mates The No Good Redwood Ramblers.

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY

May 7th marks the yearly Free Comic Book Day! and since the big boys won't let us play in their sandbox without spending $1,000, we're throwing our own party. Come check us out the first Saturday in May and we'll have comic book buttons courtesy of Daisy Drygoods, on-sale graphic novels for the snagging as well as a box full of free comics at the counter. Anyone who walks through the door is encouraged to grab a free issue. Make sure to visit Northcoast Roleplaying for official Comic Book Day stuff and when you're done, head over to the kid's table where we'll be flinging spoonfuls of casserole and prostrating ourselves before a stone idol of Jack Kirby.



!NEW STUFF!

ODDFUTURE

Oddfuturewolfgangkillthemall. Where to start with these guys? A Hip Hop collective out of L.A. featuring leader Tyler, The Creator and members Earl Sweatshirt (quite possibly our favorite rap moniker of all time), Hodgy Beats, Domo Genesis, Mike G, singer Frank Ocean, producers Left Brain, Syd tha Kyd (who is also the group's engineer) and the Super 3 and other non-musical members. Crazy ass skate kids who's live shows bring to mind the energy of early Bad Brains or other D.C. hardcore bands. With a gravel tongued swagger we haven't seen since early Wu-Tang releases, Tyler is set to drop his debut album Goblin sometime this May. While we could do without the F bombs...and we don't mean Fuck, this is some next level shit that west coast hip hop desperately needs. Check out the self released video for his single "Yonkers"


HOLLY GOLIGHTLY & THE BROKEOFFS "No Help Coming"

We're not gonna lie, we have a big ole' crush on Ms. Holly and love pretty much everything she does. Hell, Adam even danced his first wedding dance to a Holly song. This new album, on brown swirl vinyl, is a shot in the arm of blues, country and rock that promises to take over our record player for at least the rest of this week. While not straying too far from the last couple of releases she's done with her man Lawyer Dave they switch it up enough to make it interesting. Even throwing in a cover of a Wavy Gravy song "L.S.D. made a wreck of me". WE LOVE HOLLY GOLIGHTLY!!


OCHESTRE POLY-RYTHMO "The Cotonou Club"

Their first album in twenty years, recorded on all analog equipment in Paris, hail the latest album from musical legends Orchestre Poly-Rythmo. Released on Strut Records, this heavy double Lp sees not only revamping of old material but new songs and guest spots by Angelique Kidjo and Franz Ferdinand!


LEFT LANE CRUISER "All You Can Eat"

This was a staple of the tour van during Radio Moscow's last European tour. A mix of honky-tonk, hard rock and slide guitar influenced by Mississippi bluesmen, Left Lane Cruiser stays in the vein along with duos like Hillstomp and Doo Rag but puts the pedal to the metal when the goin' gets loud. Their new album, released in March of this year on Alive, was partially recorded by labelmate John Wesley Myers, of The Black Diamond Heavies.



THE ROCK A TEENS "Woo Hoo"

Uncovered on one of Adam's digging trips, the story behind this band is a sad and all too repeated tale in musical history. These boys wrote a hit number called Woo-Hoo, were threatened with a plagiarism lawsuit from another artist so they sold the rights to their producer for pennies. What they didn't know was that their producer had already brokered a deal to sell the song to Roulette for a tidy profit. The band recorded one album after the single's success but then faded into obscurity. This is the song from Kill Bill that launched the 30 second fascination with the 5678's...but better.


LOCAL COMIC!
We're excited to highlight a local comic in our blog this month! Created by local Brother and Sister Team , Coin-Op is printed right here in town by Bug Press. The layout is grabbing, the colors vibrant and the stories a sort of comic strip meets ZAPP, with art that brings to mind the work of R. Crumb and Moscoso. Come check it out, as each issue is published in a limited run.

We've hit the terrible two!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY YOU OLD SO AND SO

April 1st marks our second year anniversary here at the store and we're celebrating the birthday the way any parent of a two year old would, by foam wrapping everything in preparation for the storm to come. Already our heads are spinning from three awesome and completely different in-stores this week plus the incredible submissions from the art contest and the shop shows no sign of stopping for a nap anytime soon. We'd like to thank all our customers, supporters, friends & family and most importantly, the hobo who regularly cleans out our ashtray for us...we couldn't do this without you. Seriously though, we really couldn't be doing this job we love so very much without all of you who buy records, come to the shows, bring us your used music, or even just tell your friends about us, thank you for being a part of our dream.

KITTY, DAISY & LEWIS

There are those moments here at the shop where we're reminded how much we don't know about music hitting the scene and this, dear readers, is one of those times. Kitty, Daisy and Lewis, the three children of Graeme Durham, (owner of The Exchange, a British mastering studio known for recent albums like "the XX" and "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix"), have been releasing singles since all the way back in 2005. Their music, which incorporates elements of Western Swing, R&B, Sun-era rock n' roll and even Hawaiian, is like something you'd expect coming out of an old Victrola on Sunday nights. Though they've toured with bands like Coldplay and Jools Holland, the band is true to their sound, collecting all vintage equipment with which to record not only cds and lps but limited runs of 78s as well. Their new album comes out May 30th and we're hoping it will get US release at the same time. Until then, we'll have their other album in stock in cd.


TV ON THE RADIO "Nine Types of Light" April 22

After letting down most of their original fans with "Dear Science," TVOTR are back at it again. Billed as an album/movie, "Nine Types of Light" will release right before Record Store Day. Personally, we were big fans before that last album and this one sounds like another push in the direction "Dear Science" took, (like a bad RHCP from the mid 2000's), but hey what do we know. We'd love to show you the full trailer for the release but it's only on itunes and we don't even know what pinging it to you means. Instead, here's a mini trailer and a song from the album.


THE MOUNTAIN GOATS "All Eternals Deck" OUT NOW

It's the Mountain Goats. Anything we say about this album doesn't really matter, we're biased and we buy anything John Darnielle does and worry about if it's any good later.


FLEET FOXES "Helplessness Blues" May 3

Ok, here it is. We've all been here before. Last year Fleet Foxes kicked ass and took names with Sun Giant and their self titled release. On the heels of this comes their second full length album. Will it win people over as much as the first? Truthfully we've only listened to one track pre-release date and while it sounded more Simon and Garfunkle than the CSN sound their last album seemed to have, there was similar orchestrations with lyrics that were a manifesto beating at the walls of the its construct (in other words, he's got a lot to say in each line).


PANDA BEAR "Tomboy" April 12

Now we know all of you are sleeping at night with your Animal Collective tickets clutched tightly in your hands, but April 12th will also mark the release of Panda Bear's next full length album. If you've been some of the lucky few snagging copies of the singles as they've come out, or you just listened to a track online, you know that this is a slightly new direction since the last album. Personally, we like what we've heard so far and can't wait. Also, be on the lookout for the 7"/t-shirt he's releasing for RSD, we ordered it and let's all hope they come in. And if Panda Bear is reading this, how about coming by to promote your album when you're in town?

Speaking of Record Store Day, they've finally put up a list you can download with your choices for this year. We've ordered a metric shit ton of stuff and we're lighting candles at Conway's portrait in hopes that it all shows up. Regardless of what happens, it will be a stomping good time as DJ Brian Woida spins his funky ass off.

RECORD DRAWING
We'd like to thank everyone who entered both the drawing and contest but as Sean Connery once said in a horrible spanish accent, "there can be only one." First the drawing was picked by Lord Henry the Duke of Paducah himself. All tickets were swirled into the Vader Helmet and the youngster was dangled overhead to pick out the winner. Congratulations to Alexa Roitman, who walks away with a picture lp of George Clinton!!

DESIGN CONTEST
This was truly a tough call, we got some amazing submissions and spent a long time trying to figure out who to choose. In the end we're proud to announce Derek Diorio as our winner. Check out the amazing design below and keep your eye out for the hoodies 'cuz once they're gone, they're gone.


But that's not all kiddies, at the end of the night we had to name a runner up based on how cool the design was. So since the hoodie can only be one person, we'll be releasing a set of Missing Link Records Postcards designed by Brian Woida! Everyone's favorite local moustache put together a set of cards based on his incredible lp prints and we're pickle tickled to have them in the store soon! Can't show you all of them of course, but here is a sneak peak at one of them...

New Lost City Rambler visits store, pets cat.

We had our bar set pretty high this last week. Musician, filmmaker and photographer John Cohen has been on tour premiering his newest film, "Roscoe Holcomb from Daisy Kentucky." and, thanks to a collaboration between Adam and Craig from the Dust Busters, John agreed to come and screen the film in our little shop. We apologize in advance to the folks who couldn't come that we're bragging but there was VERY limited space for the evening and truthfully word-of-mouth filled the list up faster than we anticipated. We slid away the racks, piled in the chairs and set up Matt's enormous old television and poof! "Missing Link Theater."

Alongside the film was a special show with John and The Dust Busters. If you haven't already heard us talking about how amazing these guys are then let us say it again, these three are walking, talking, singing, strumming tune machines. Banjo, fiddle, guitar, jew's harp (can we say that?), spoons, banjolin, no instrument was spared. To sum it up, the night was a foot stomping treat that we'll never, ever forget. After all, it isn't everyday you get the honor of meeting someone who has influenced both your love of music and the way you see it, much less take them through your local Co-Op looking for breakfast.

The whole thing was a hootenanny and now our New Lost City Ramblers lps are never going to leave the turntable. To the fifty-four people (and one hobo) who were there, thank you for donating freely and having such a good time. To the hobo we have this to say: you can keep that jar of baby food buddy and hell, if you're reading this, we'll buy you another one.

We really recommend you give it a listen)



THAT OLE NEW BOOTY
This crazy weather has us listening to all sorts of different shit as we go from sprinkling to sunny, to gloomy to hailing to double rainbow, all in the time it takes Charlie Sheen to polish of an eight ball. With all the new tunes on our stereo, we felt selfish just keeping them to ourselves, so here you go.

EARTH "Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light 1"

Our favorite stoner lullabye music releases another album to nod your head too. If you caught the band when they played at Nocturnum in Eureka last year then you already heard a taste of what this new album has to offer. K Records own Karl Blau has taken over on bass, replacing longtime member Don McGreevy and the organ and horns of Steve Moore have been swapped for cello of Lori Goldston. Goldston, who performed a brief solo set during their performance, has proven to add an equally tasteful addition to the music. This is not a new Earth, but a fresh take.


THE DUSTBUSTERS with JOHN COHEN "Prohibition is a Failure"

How badly do you need this album? We dunno, how badly does Justin Beiber need a haircut? Musical legend John Cohen (of the New Lost City Ramblers) and Brooklyn's own purveyors of old time, the Dust Busters, come together for nine traditional tunes that will leave your finger sore from hitting the play button over and over again. We could waste time typing all the musical nuances of this album but let's just put it on the glass, you don't like this, bring it back (we're that sure of this one).

DEMONS CLAWS "The Defrosting Of..."

Originally named the defrosting of Walt Disney, then abbreviated for legal reasons, this 3rd album from Canadian rockers is a countryfied jangle popping loose at the seams. What more do you need to know?


BLACK MIRROR "Reflections in Global Music"

24 tracks from Bali, Burma, Cameroon, China, England, Germany, Greece, India, Japan, Java, Laos, Poland, Portugal, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Syria, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, Vietnam, and Yugoslavia all newly transferred and mastered from 78s. 18 of these tracks appear on disc for the first time and all but one has never been reissued in the U.S. before.

DRIVE BY TRUCKERS "Go-Go Boots"

On last year’s The Big To-Do, the Drive-By Truckers, partly energized by the move to a new record label, released a barnstorming album that rocked as hard as any of their early releases, but also had a maturity to pull off some great narratives and whiskey-teared ballads. On this year’s Go-Go Boots, the statements aren’t nearly as boisterous, the mood is more consistent, and the characters that occupy the songs are more fleshed out. - Sean McCarthy


ART OF FIELD RECORDING

The husband and wife team of Margo and Art Rosenbaum have spent decades collecting field recordings of 'traditional' music. This cd is a sampling of music from the two later-to-be released box sets from the Rosenbaums. The sampler CD was released in conjunction with an exhibition of Art's paintings and drawings at the Georgia Museum of Art.

BOOTY TO KEEP YOUR EYES OUT FOR

WHITEY MORGAN & THE 78's

Adam's latest score, a double shot of honkey-tonk and outlaw country that sounds as if it was an unreleased album from someone like Waylon or Jerry Reed. This second full length from the band is top notch and sold out already this week. The bad news is that there were only 500 of the lp pressed but the good news is the cd is still available! Keep an eye out for the next shipment.

IVORY COAST SOUL

Another obscure french label joins the re-issue ranks as Hot Casa Records releases a two lp set that promises to be the next big thing for all you Soundway and Analog Africa fans. 13 rare tracks of Afro-funk, soul and disco fusions recorded in Abidjan, former capital of the Ivory Coast, between 1972 and 1982. We're working on grabbing a big box of these so drop us a line if you want one held for your turntable.


JOHN COHEN "The Legacy of Roscoe Holcomb"

If you missed your chance to buy one at the show, like we did, or you just haven't seen it yet, now's your chance! Compiled from footage that wasn't used for Cohen's previous film about Holcomb, "That High Lonesome Sound," along with additional footage shot at that time, this is a great addition to the DVD rack. Plus it also includes Cohen's first feature on Holcomb, "That High Lonesome Sound." A film not a movie, Roscoe Holcomb from Daisy Kentucky also contains bonus features where the art of quilting is compared to the art of banjo picking.

GREEN LANTERN SECRET ORIGINS
As a longtime lantern fan, picking this up I thought to myself, "this is a story so I could repeat this story backwards and forward, this will offer NO surprises." What I discovered, to my joy, was an indepth look at why ole Abin Sur was headed towards Earth in the first place. Old school Lantern fans will be stoked at the new take on story as well as all the in-depth knowledge, new fans ought to find themselves dropped into a well drawn lesson on how the whole Green Lantern things actually works. A hardcover edition with a twenty dollar tag, we've sliced this lovable puppy down to 12.99

MONDAY MARCH 25TH MARISSA ANDERSON
We mentioned earlier on the blog that Mississippi Records had told us to check out their new Lp coming out by Marissa Anderson. Some of you may recognize Ms Anderson from her earlier projects, such as the Dolly Ranchers (maybe some of you older Arcata residents remember seeing them at the Milk Barn). Her new album, a collection of 12 improvisational pieces for lap steel and slide, is, to quote Adam, "John Fahey-ish" and we're damn excited she wanted to come play here. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for more on this soon.

RECORD STORE DAY

The calls are coming in and it's time to remind you all that these limited releases are VERY TOUGH for independent stores to get in beyond a few copies. We all do what we can but with the little we're given, so this record store day if your store didn't get something or ran out, don't give 'em any guff, they worked hard. Here is what we do have to say about the upcoming shitfit that will be record store day.
1. We cannot guarantee ANYONE to get a copy of the PHISH 45. We're ordering as many as we can and what we get is what we'll get. First come, first served, April 16th.
2. Record Store Day hasn't really released any official lists of what's coming, you'll know as we do, trust us. There is talk of a download full of french bands to commemorate this year, however.
3. We do know there will be a KILLER release from Numero Group limited to 1000 LP, 1000 CD and 300 Cassettes! All unreleased, all drool worthy.
4. We'll open at 11:30 as always, with no preferential treatment on who gets what, and a limit of one of each title per customer.
5. Seriously, stop askin' about the PHISH.

Ok cats and kittens, it's been one looong month for only 28 days and now we're gonna go take a nap and dream about how awesome Jefferson State Old Time Revue is going to be this year. If you need to buy anything just leave the money on the counter, take change when applicable.

BLACK VELVET EXPLOSION - FEB 11TH

If you've stopped by the shop lately, you've seen our amazing new tribute to our lord Conway, painted on black velvet by former local boy Chris Henry. February ArtsArcata we'll be hanging a whole slew of new black velvet paintings featuring celebrities like William Shatner, Dwight Yoakam, The baby from Eraserhead and more! Come enjoy the evening as we rock out to Alannah Myles on repeat.

WATER TOWER BUCKET BOYS vs ABE LINCOLN - FEB 12TH

They've wowed you at the barn dances and they strutted their stuff behind the crooked jades at the playhouse last month, this month see these fun-lovin' boys from Portland tear hell through the shop. With fake bears and stove top hats, they'll be playing an entire set of Abe Lincoln inspired tunes but don't say anything 'cuz we told 'em they were coming by for a free lunch. If'n you can't make the afternoon show, catch them later at HumBrews with Hillstomp for 10 bucks (9:30pm).

TANSY & TARWEED AND A STICK & A STONE - FEB 15TH.
Noted for her unique guitar style, Brenna plays original folk tunes involving guitar, cello, and piano. She recently helped form Tansy and Tarweed, a anarcha-folk doom jazz quartet based in Portland, OR. A Stick and A Stone has been described as having “elements such as classical instrumentation, punk-infused chamber tones, and supernatural vocals, teamed with multi-disciplinary performances."

GUYS ON GUITARS - FEB 23RD

Former Broken Hearts guitarist / solo musician Zak McLongstreet returns to town for a visit and will be playing an instore set alongside Colin Begell from Strix Vega and Phil of TLSNBE in a show we affectionately call, "gUys wIth gUItArs." We'll be starting things about 5 p.m. so stop by and grab some floor.


7COME11 at JAMBALAYA - FEB 4TH (DAMN)
A well wishing promoter dropped off a 45 of these guys for us at the store and after a four album long Conway Twitty session we threw it on to see what a song titled "dollar store" sounded like. What we got was a pleasant surprise in the form of bluesy guitar funky organ and on point drums, creating a vocal-less groove that reminded us a bit of artists like Quintron or Decheman and the Gardener. This self proclaimed "Hammond Organ Trio" just played the Jambalaya and before you weep too much at missing the show, they seem to hail from Santa Cruz so make sure you catch it next time, we know we'll be there.

THE TICKET FANDANGO

So we've had a metric shit ton of folks heading into the store wondering about where to buy their tickets. To these folks we'd like to say we're trying our best to bring in as many event tickets as we can with our new location but bear with us as we wait for the tickets roll in and in the coming weeks if you see some we're missing, please let us know. That being said, no we will not be selling tickets for the Animal Collective shows up here.

NEW FEBRUARY STUFF

CAVE SINGERS "No Witch" - FEB 22ND

So we got an early copy of the new cave singers album to peruse and from the moment we hit play we were sold. Horns, handclaps and an organ are just a few new things added to the same awesome equation the Cave Singers mapped out with Invitation Songs way back in 2007.

NEW MOGWAI "Hardcore will Never Die but You Will" - FEB 15TH

Mogwai have always seemed to have a much better sense of humor than most of their peers. While most of the bands that sound like them opt for either brooding, austere soundscapes or breathtakingly ethereal musical collages, the Scottish five-piece have a knack for poking fun at everything from the silliness of the genre they’re often lumped into to the stagnancy of much of today’s music by toying around with dynamics and silence to shake things up aurally. -Möhammad Choudhery

A HAWK AND A HACKSAW "Cervantine" - FEB 15TH

With each album this group seems to shed their history as indie rock gypsyphiles and secure their legacy as modern purveyors of a European musical legacy.

DAN MELCHIOR "Assemblage Blues" - FEB 15TH

Let's just be honest, we love Dan Melchior. We buy nearly everything this fuzz rocker has ever put out and we only say nearly because he seems to release a new 45 every month. This month shows another new lp and while we weren't able to offer you a sneak peak track, this description from the label just about sums it up.
"As Dan Melchior continues to kick the Medway gutbucket to the curb, he is also willfully absorbing all manner've underground cankerous crud along the way. For those endeared to wallet chains and crisp, cuffed jeans, this has been tantamount to heresy. But for thems what's embraced the sounds of "the new Dan," said aberrations are as welcome to caustic ears as a cold beer is to a set've parched lips. And while last year's Visionary Pangs LP (released with Das Menace on the S-S label) was a grower and a half, Assemblage Blues snuffs it as if it were no more'n a sneeze in the wind." "This here LP seemingly vibes from such left field Blighty heavies as Instant Automatons and L. Voag as well as the dark side of Alex Chilton (think Dusted in Memphis) and the 3:00 A.M. shudder of Prominent Disturbance. Within the canon of the Siltbreeze label, Melchior's magnificent malarkey on Assemblage Blues has secured him a spot somewhere between The Shadow Ring and Jim Shepard. The pone don't sizzle much hotter than there. And the sneezin' is nil."

SOMETHING FROM OUR PICKS BOARDS


--Matts' picks this week include a little something we found while making our giant Numero Group order last month, and truthfully we forgot about it to what with all the Syl Johnson, Mighty Mike and Brotherman on Cassette but forget all that right now and let me tell you about Johnny Lunchbreak. For less than two years, Johnny Luchbreak wowed the musical scene of Hartford Connecticut circa before disappearing into obscurity and leaving behind a small legacy of unreleased demos. Though they never recorded an album, this demo collection is an infectious garage/funk/blues/pop monster that has moments of Jefferson Airplane, Bill Fay and The Modern Lovers even though they were attempting a Stones/Bee Gees thing. The Lions are the result of an impromptu 2006 recording session by members of Breakestra, Connie Price and the Keystones, Rhythm Roots All-Stars, Orgone, Sound Directions, Plant Life, Poetics and Macy Gray, at Orgone's Killion Studios, in Los Angeles. Released on the oh so loved Ubiquity Records, Jungle Struttin' is a collection of ten originals and one cover that has been hailed as "a modern old school reggae album."
